Marange Womens Alliance

Marange, ZImbabwe is a diamond and gold mining community where poverty prevails, many people suffer from hunger, cannot afford schools for their children and do not have access to health care. The RJT supports and partners with the Marange Women’s Alliance(MWA) a registered community based organization and a grassroots movement to prevent human rights abuses by providing education, self-empowering support and by raising awareness in the international community. The MWA believes that all of Marange’s citizens should have access to water, medical services, and constitutional human rights.

Marange Womens Alliance celebrates World Day Against Trafficking in Persons Day

Marange Womens Alliance are champions in the fight against sex trafficking

Marange Women's Alliance and the Responsible Jewelry Transformative are championing the fight against Sex Trafficking in the extractives industry happening in Marange, Zimbabwe. Over the past three years we have produced a documentary film elevating the voices of survivors, held educational community events and created inclusion for survivors in our livelihood projects. In July we held a “Human trafficking Netball Championship” on The United Nations (UN) World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, which brought over 400 attendees. In line with the theme for 2024 "Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking” the local Department of Education allowed all of the schools to take the day off and attend the event. The successful day of awareness has laid the path for the next steps of trafficking interventions and training for the local police and at the mines, to continue the work towards women's rights and the fight against trafficking.

The Chicken Coops brings income for the women of Marange and supports the MWA technology initiatives.

Responsible Jewelry Transformative gives chickens to diamond community members to empower women

In August of 2023 at the Chicago Responsible Jewelry Conference, conference attendees donated over $7000 to fund 5 chicken coops for the MWA. MWA has built 5 coops in five villages using the coops to raise broiler chickens which are sold back to the community members and diamond mining companies. The coops create sustainability for MWA giving monthly data support and sustainable income for women, and their families. The project fosters collaborative relationships between MWA and the mines and empowers women. 20% of the profits from all chicken sales are returned to MWA and equally distributed in the form of data, facilitating Whatsapp communication a powerful tool for many women living in isolated villages to break down barriers of silence. The valuable lifeline to a network of peers is a mechanism for reporting gendered rights abuses, accessing court advocacy and bolstering individuals' resilience and fortitude with authenticity, mutuality, and growth-fostering relationships. The direct number to a trusted police department placed in the chicken house achieves a pathway to safety for women.
